Whale Watching and Signal Hill

A puffin attempting to take off ... cute bird but a bit useless at flying. (or is it a whale's tail...?)

Rich with the only whale we saw ... look how big his vertebrae is.

Pretty Birds, unfortunately no tits today. (Rich)

No whales ... :-(

I made it to (nearish) the top ... just ... hip wasn't so pleased! (sam wouldnt even raise her arms above her head because other people were around and she might attract attention!)The view over st john's - this was rich attempting to frame a shot ... shame he didn't bother telling me which way to look!
We just had our first two whole days off in a row! Yay!
Saturday we booked a whale watching tour from bay bulls. We saw lots and lots and lots of birds (puffins, gulls and terrs), but alas no whale wanted to come say hi. The tour guide did regale us with a few choice numbers however ... reminiscent of the vietnamese "traditional singing", but more like a horrendous nursery rhyme... There were some atlantic dolphins, but the photography skills aren't up to much currently so we couldn't get them in time, boohoo. Disappointing, but we are going on another whale watching tour in Tadoussac, Quebec, in our last three weeks, and there you may get to see a blue whale .. Plus our housemates were lucky enough to see whales from the shore at Ferryland, which we will hopefully be going to on our next weekend off, so fingers crossed for then.

Yesterday, we walked up signal hill with a few stops - and yes I survived! woohoo! Twas very pretty, particularly as for once it was sunny here. You get a view over the whole of st john's in all it's vastness from there and the rugged coastline either way as well. Didn't make it all the way up to the castle bit, but that can be done another time with a taxi. At the top there is a geo centre, where we learnt all about rocks... geology rocks.... and the story of titanic.

We were going to go and sample some of Newfoundland's best folk music last night, but hippy was a bit too sore by then, so we didn't bother. After the regatta day (which consisted of food, fluffy toys to win and bouncy castles only - think someone needs to show them how to throw a proper fete), we weren't exactly too disappointed...

Now back to work - only 9 more shifts in the ED!!
