Dildo and around

On Saturday, we dared to hire another car from Budget... this time it worked woohoo! And a nice lady in the queue gave us a free ticket for an upgrade, so we had a non american car ... even better! And best of all, we did not break down a single bit.

We went over to Portugal Cove first, to see a pretty coastline and take photos. That was pretty much it lol apart from a few houses in each cove, then down the coast a bit to Conception bay past shag rock and backside hill ... definitely some pervert named all these - or the local gynaecologist.

Brigus was one of our stops for cake and tea ... had that "foreigners" walk into a locals only pub event at the cafe, every head turned and stared at us for a while. Apparently we are interesting to look at. The cake was ok, nothing amazing though. There wasnt really anything else in Brigus, it was pretty, with some rowing boats and houses. It is supposed to be a really English village, but I think whoever said that had never gone to England ...

We accidently drove past Cupids, and then stopped in Hearts Content after a few misturns. Not sure who named it... pretty coastline, house and nothing else. There were a lot of small villages along the way, each with just a scattering of houses and maybe a post office. The whole place was really quiet for a saturday - not sure where all the people went.

Dildo was the highlight of the day ... yes the place is actually called Dildo, in fact there is a south dildo as well ...

There are two "Captain's Dildo" in Dildo, one is a cardboard man (the original who we are saluting above) and a newer guy who has more substance. There is the Dildo Interpretation centre (heritage of the area..) and a craft store. We did stop for more tea and another cake - see above. Twas good, but again, nothing really much in Dildo to shout about. Unfortunately we missed the celebratory Dildo Days festival that happened at the end of July - too bad.

Yesterday we treated ourselves to brunch at Cora's - see photos. This place does good breakfasts with piles of fruit on the side. We then went to the cinema in the afternoon and saw "District 9", a film about an alien slum outside Jo'Burg, was ok. We did get the biggest bags of popcorn we could find hehe, then couldnt actually finish it lol.

In other news, we have both started our new rotations, me in paeds ortho and Rich in ICU at st clares. Paeds ortho is pretty boring as its mainly clinics and I dont know enough about the area to give differentials and accurately diagnose a lot of the patients. I should be going to theatre later this week, so can see something a bit different (all the lists were cancelled last week). Quite frustrating to go from doing everything for the patients in Emerg, to doing nothing in paeds. Rich got to put in a femoral arterial line today, and is getting some good teaching, but otherwise not doing a whole lot. So we are both relaxing a bit after Emerg - though also both missing it too!!

This friday we are going on a four day trip with Frauke to Terra Nova National Park and Twillingate. We are doing a whale watching tour and winery tour in Twillingate - fingers crossed for some humpbacks!! Then Terra Nova will be hiking (avec le crutches for me and only the short hikes) and maybe some kayaking if I can sit in it ok. Monday is Labor Day in Canada anyway, so we have the day off. It will be good to explore the rest of Newfoundland a bit more.
